I just happened upon this wealth of information...

A book on the Charleston Orphanage. I have found SEVERAL names of
children that I would have not known existed had I not looked. Many
people died from illness and war, and many people were too poor to care
for their children. Many children were released back to their parents,
or parent after a period of time. Some becamed indentured, some released
when of age, and many others died while living in the orphanage.

I suggest checking out the orphanage records. I found names of parents,
birth info, personal history, and sometimes comments were written on the
'virtues' of mothers.

I regret not having the time to write the name of the book (Charleston
Orphanage (SC) -1900), located at the Chas. Historical Society. I do not
recall seeing this particular book (a records book) in the Charleston
City Library. I intend to return to continue my search, and next time I
will write down the name of my source <>.

Happy Hunting!
