Subject: Orphanage Records - comment From: Janet Jilote Date: February 20, 1998 I just happened upon this wealth of information... A book on the Charleston Orphanage. I have found SEVERAL names of children that I would have not known existed had I not looked. Many people died from illness and war, and many people were too poor to care for their children. Many children were released back to their parents, or parent after a period of time. Some becamed indentured, some released when of age, and many others died while living in the orphanage. I suggest checking out the orphanage records. I found names of parents, birth info, personal history, and sometimes comments were written on the 'virtues' of mothers. I regret not having the time to write the name of the book (Charleston Orphanage (SC) -1900), located at the Chas. Historical Society. I do not recall seeing this particular book (a records book) in the Charleston City Library.
