Many children were placed in the Orphan House that perhaps had a sick parent, or parent(s) in the poor house, or during wartime, and some were abandoned. And yes, I have seen most often that single mothers placed their children in the orphanage until they remarried, were able to care for them after the death of their spouse, were able to place them with family or friends, or left their children there where they were able to find work through being indentured and hopefully able to learn a trade.
