Thanks Doug,

... for the info. No, I didn't know that Dutch Settlers
moved to James Isl. Oddly enough that is where most of my
family now lives!

I was wondering if some of the Dutch were traveling with the
Huguenots. I have records of the family living in
McClellanville in the mid 1700's, then later moving to the
Chas. area.

I am running on a hunch. The surname I'm looking for is
SHOKES. Family members tell me they were French, but I have
a feeling that though came from the fact that they spoke
French and that probably happened because they lived in the
Huguenot settlement.

Now, I know the French Huguenots travelled from France to
Switzerland and to the Netherlands, etc. I have found the
many persons with the variant surname spelled SCHOCH in
Switzerland, a handful in France (SCHOCH, and SCHOKE). Then
I came across even less in the Netherlands, but the spelling
was most often with the "K". I'm sure the name was
originally Germanic, but there were few found in Germany.

Since my line goes cold in mid 1700s in SC I think they
migrated from elsewhere in the US. The name can be found in
PA, VA, and one in early NY records.

Well, I'm sure I have written more than you were interested
in reading! <>

If you ever need help in any J.I. digs let me know! Where is
the Sea Island Historical Society located. What kind of info
do you have on the area?

Hey, did one of your relatives rescue me after Hugo (Bostick
Towing)?! Was stuck in the mud on James Isl. while checking
my Mom's house.

After thought... could these immigrants have changed their
names to Anglicized versions? Or perhaps the literate one in
the group was not Dutch.

I'm curious, do you have a list of those names?
