Janet,

I'll look for the file with the Dutch names if you give me a day or two.

Send me the information where you lose the family. We have 3-4
researchers on projects at any one time. I'll pass it along and - who
knows- maybe we'll get lucky.

The mission of the Sea Island Historical Society is the discovery and
celebration of the history of the South Carolina Sea Islands from James
Island south to St. Helena.
We're completing two years of research on the history of James Island.
I've just completed two histories on McLeod Plantation and the Morris
Island Lighthouse. Our big project is the full restoration of a
plantation site on James Island. Our plans include a research facility
on sea island history and Carolina history from ante-bellum to
postbellum.

Our current research is focused on the African American from slavery to
freedom to ownership of land. We're preparing the first indexing of the
Freedman's Bureau records for S. C. We've also just run a test program
abstracting the records of the Freedman's Bank. It's a fascinating
record including the place of birth, where brought up and place of
residence (1868-1870) for each freedman. The record also includes age,
occupation, "works for", complexion, names of spouse, children, father,
mother, brothers and sisters. Many include the name of their former
master and their slave name, if different.

We abstracted all the records that any reference to James Island (about
200). We've written a grant to index all the records for the Charleston
branch - about 10,000.

We're running the genealogies of most of the historic families on the
sea islands. All the islands have a very common history. They all were
initially focused on naval stores (tar, pitch, turpentine) and live oak
to build ships. Cattle became very big in the 18th century. Indigo
became the first cash crop and cotton became king (as opposed to rice).
Well I've certainly told you more than you'd want to know about Sea
Island Historical Society.

Yes, my younger brother's company was Bostick towing but we haven't
owned it for 6+ years.
