The land laid out on James Island Creek was called Jamestown. There are several mysteries: 1) no plat or map has survived; 2) while they were supposed to be Dutch, the early James Island surnames are not Dutch; and 3) the exact location of Jamestown has never been verified- a dig two years ago produced very little in 17th century artifacts at the site thought to be Jamestown.
