The lake you ask about is most probably Lake Murray. I grew up in Columbia and
we had a place at Lake Murray where we spent much of our time during the hot
Carolina summers. In 1977-78 I worked for South Carolina Electric & Gas Company
(SCE&G) as an Engineer at McMeekin Station, a power plant located next to the
Lake Murray Dam. SCE&G owned and operated both the Lake Murray Dam and the
McMeekin Station. While working at McMeekin I discovered in one of the storage
rooms numerous boxes containing old photographs and other materials about the
construction and history of the lake. I received an award for submitting a
suggestion that these materials be collected and that a Company archives be
established to protect and preserve such materials. So, I know for a fact that
records and photographs exist which document some of the work done to create the
lake. You may be able to discover something in such records about the
cemeteries, farms, homes, and such that were covered by the lake.

Construction of the lake began in 1927 and the dam was completed in 1930. You
can read more about the lake on the SCANA website at:
