Hi Folks,
I just subscribed yesterday and thought I should post a
query.
I am trying to locate an ancester that may or may not have been born in
North Carolina. According to a letter written by my gr grandfather John
Green CATES, I, in 1895, his ancestry is as follows:
father: Wilson G. CATES b 1811 Shelbyville, TN
g Father Robert D. CATES b in Shelbyville, TN,
gg Father: James F. CATES from South Carolina moved to Shelbyville in
1734,
(According to the US Census Map 1790, Shelbyville could have
been in
either North Carolina or the Land South of The Ohio River)
ggg Father: Robert CATE b abt 1670 in Eng d bef 18 Feb 1729 in Surrey
Co, NC
m abt 1693 in Henrico Co, VA to Ann "Anna" unk

I also have another source that was written by a Genealogist in 1944,
"History of the CATE/CATES Family", which is an excerpt from Cates and
Sanborne's "Cates/-Cate Family of New England".
So my query is for James F. CATES may have been born in VA, or NC, or
SC. There are a number of people that a doing research on the CATE &
CATES genealogy, but none of them have James F. CATES in any of their
databases, so I am beginning to look for the missing person. This has
to be the skimpiest query I have made on the net so far.

Can any one doing genealogy research in South Carolina help me locate
some information on this person? Land records? Marriage records?
Court records (purchase and sale of land, live stock, slaves, etc.)?
