I just received notice of 300 new rolls of microfilm that the South
Carolina Room in the Charleston County Library has recently received. I'm
including a very brief description of each of the new sets. Many of these
resources are useful for early research in SC and Charleston.

* South Carolina Will Transcripts, 1782-1868 (31 reels)
Typed transcripts of wills from all except these counties: Beaufort,
Chesterfield, Colleton, Georgetown, Lancaster, Lexington, Orangeburg.

* Accounts Audited of Claims Growing Out of the Revolution in South
Carolina (150 reels)
Microfilms of the actual vouchers redeemed after the Revolutionary War for
payment of goods and services used during the conflict. The vouchers are
in alphabetical order by last name of voucher holder.

* The Confederate Historian (6 reels)
Two reels contain 2 period lists of CSA deceased. The remainder of the
reels offers a roster of SC's CSA troops, in order by unit type (ex:
artillery)

* Memorials of the 17th and 18th Century SC Land Titles (14 reels)
Records of land changing hands in SC from the 1670's up till 1719. Lots
of records are extremely detailed, with many previous transfers of property
listed in a single memorial.

* "The Charleston American" newspaper (35 reels)
From Aug. 24, 1916 to Sept. 29, 1923. Local liberal paper started by John
P. Grace largely to express his political views, thus many debates were
fought out between this paper and The News and Courier.

* Misc. Negro Newspapers (5 reels)
Late 1800's, early 1900's. Papers from 27 states and from Washington, DC,
are included. No publication is represented in its entirety, but there is
great information here on African-American life at the time. The SC papers
include:
-African American Citizen Chas. Jan 17, 1900
-Charleston Advocate Chas. May 11 1867
-Free Press Chas. April 5, 18, 1868
-Georgetown Planet	Gtown May 31, 1873
-Missionary Record Chas. July 5, 1873
-People's Recorder Cola/Union Jan 13, 27, 1900
-Rock Hill Messenger RockH Jan 26, 1900
-SC Leader Chas. 7 ranging between Oct 7, 1865 to May
12, 1866

*SC Dept of Archives and History Combined Alphabetical Index (19 reels)
Personal and place names indexed from 30 series of early SC records at the
SC State Archives, helpful in ordering films from SC Dept of Archives and
History

*  Special Schedules of the 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880 Census  (21 reels)
Agriculture, Industry, Mortality ('50 and '60 includes slaves), Social
Statistics Schedules (all but 1880 are # of schools, churches, etc. 1880's
is "Defective, Dependent, Delinquent", listing anyone considered to fit
into one of these categories.)

* Records of the British Record Office Relating to the SC, 1163-1782 (12
reels)
Full transcripts of papers in the BR Office involving SC. 3 part index on
roll one.

* Minute Books of Circut and District Courts for SC, 1789-1849 (5 reels)
Court proceedings of the admiralty, bankruptcy, and criminal courts.

*Duties on Trade at Charleston, 1784-1789 (1 reel)
This source contains a record of the goods that arrived or departed the
port of Charleston during the stated time.

These newspapers are now held by the SCR:

-Deutsche Zeitung (German lang.) Chas. 1853-1917
-Investigator Sept 1812-Dec 1813
-Southern Patriot 1818-1849
-World and Sunday Budget (not complete collection) 1888-1891

I hope that these resources might be helpful.
