Harmon Cummins History

Harmon Cummins Sr. said he knew but little of his family connection as his
father died when he was small. He said his mother was Irish and raised 3
children, Harmon, John, and Milla Cummins.
They lived on the eastern shore of Mariland. He worked on the farm till 1775
when he maried Mary James. He being about 32 old, she about 20 years old. In
the first part of that year him and a friend concluded to inlist for 3 years,
one was to serve 11/2 years and then the othr the balance ot the time. The one
at home was to take care of the women and children. Grandmother had her first
child, 3 months old so arnagements being made, then cast lots who should go
first and the lot fell on Grand Father and he started and his brother John and
in the course of the 11/2 years his friend died he left at home and he served
out the 3 years of the war never hearing from home but 2 times he was in 7
seven of the hottest battles fought by Washington as he was imediatly under
his command.
He was in the same command that had to march 15 miles on the night 25th
December 1776 over ice and in a severe snow storm all the way from the camp to
the Deleware River where Trenton stood and taken that post and 1000 hessian
soldiers prisinor.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------

pg 8

In 1838 I stayed all night with GrandFather and GrandMother Cummins and I
asked him the particklers of that nights march and he said when the orders
came to march that a great many of the soldiers was barefoot and the orders
was to tear up their blankets and wrap their feet in them, but the calvery
went ahead and cut up the ice so it cut the blankets off their feet and also
cut their feet. Then he said it looked like you had cut a beefs throat and
dragged it on the snow and when they had taken the city and prisoners, the
soldiers could scarcely be restrained from fighting for they were in so much
pain, not one out of 20 was able to do duty next day nor for many days, some
of them for many days after. But this was not as hard a fate as he had to
endure the next winter for he was taken prisnor at the Battle of Valley Forge,
him and about 1300 others and put in jail in Philadelphia and they there had
like all to of perished with hnger and cold. It is recorded in history as the
cold winter of 1777. Out of 1300, there was about 450 or 500 came out when
eschanged. The manner in which they were fed was once in 2 days. The jailor
would come with kind of slopmade from slain horses and boiled up without salt
and had troughs around the jail and pour the stuff in there and then call like
he was calling hogs from the woods.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------

pg 9

One poor fellow was alittle forward and he reached his hand to take out a bone
and the jailor struck him with the key he had in his hand and killed him and
the key bounced out of the jailors hand and struck grandfather on the leg
making a scar that he that he carried to the grave, tho the lord blest him
with long life living to 107 years old raised a family of 9 children, 5 sons
and 4 daughters. Three of his sons weigh over 200 lbs. apiece the other about
180 lbs. the other about 165 the daughter 160, as they were common plain
farmers.
I will here digress a little in the spring of ' 76 late as I before stated
grandmother was left in care of a friend, and that friends wife had a little
girl child about one year old and one pleasant morning in May the child was at
play in the yard and would come often to the door and try to tell something so
the women went to see what passed the child ran before round the house and
gathered up the head of a large rarrlesnake and attempted to drag it along to
them. When the mother saw its danger, she snatched the child away and the
snake fell to the ground and in aniston it was in couled ready for fight.
Thus you see how merciful the Lord was to that child. This ends the snake
story.

letter dated February 7th 1877 Jacksonville

My Dear Children,

I now write you a few lines and say this is like making my will, for I know I
can not live much longer as my strength fails me very fast. Although I am in
good health yet, this weakness in my left hip, thigh and leg warns me that I
am mortal and I must soon sleep with dead.
Now, as I have notheing to bequeth you but love and good will, I will send you
the recept for making this valuable medicine, which, if you will follow the
directions, you will find it of great use. I have been selling it since the
winter that I left you in the summer, and I've been confined mostly to
Jacksonville, as I have been sick a great deal of the time with the heart
disease, that I expect to die shortly. The next spring I went to Tallahassee
and was there 6 weeks and did well. Came home in June and that fall had
another attack that lnear two years, that I was not able to go about to sell,
although I sold enough to pay expences and then get well and was ell three
years. Not sick a day. Made enough to build me a house, selling here in
Jacksonville. As I had not the means to travel by my losing $250 by dealing
with 2 bad men. If I was well enough to go through the country, I would not
take $3000 for the receipt, for here it is getting a wide circulation, but I
have given up all hope of ever being able to do much.
I have the patent right for the state of Florida, but there is none in
Georgia. So if you work right and do not give the receipt away, you will find
it to have abut 500 percent on the money invested in the stock.
If I had the time to live over, I could make it pay well, but that never can
be. The way matters turned out, the receipt cost me about $900.
I am surprised at my self that I never thought of sending you the receipt
before now, but viewing the situation, and making up my mind what to do with
the little I had, this was on last Mondy morning, I came to this conclusion.
I will Amelia my Bible and concordance and the .... receipt. My fowls and
household stuff I expect to give to them that attends me in my burial.
You may think it strange that I should talk so and say I'm in good health, but
you do not know the feeling I have about my heart and then pitying myself
makes it worse. While I could walk without... it did not hurt me so bad. But
now it seems to have deep seated pain and I believe if I was to get mad I
should die in a few minutes. So I keep cool, not allowing anything to vex me.
I will send you one of my labels and if you choose, you can have some samples?
So I conclude by saying God bless Michael M Maher and J F Maher and all of the
children, many or few. And my poor heart broken. E.S. Rehoe, I whish you was
here
