Dorotry was the Liutenant in said Co. They were sent to the Southward

they remained until the troops were ordered on North again. Signed May

 {From Nelson family records.}

"John Nelson's grand daughter, Henrietta Nelson Graham related the
following incident to her niece, Mrs Annie Young Williams, who in turn
passed it on in writing to my mother, Mrs Alice Stewart Nelson: "During
Lafayette's return to America, he visited Camden, South Carolina in 1815,
by invitation from Camden Masons to attend the 'laying of the
corner-stone of a monument to Baron De Kalb, who lost his life in the
Battle of Camden, August 19, 1780'. [14 Revolutionary battles were waged
in the vicinity of Camden and two of my maternal ancestors fought in the
Battle of Hanging Rock - Major Robert Crawford and Capt. Matthew Stewart]
 A muster of the Revolutionary soldiers was held at Camden the day of the
dedicatory event, and Gen. Lafayette shook hands with each veteran. When
modest John Nelson's turn came, the great Frenchman, recognizing him,
exclaimed, 'Why, this is little John Nelson'. Henrietta Nelson Graham was
Grandmother Jesse Nelson's sister. She was only two years old when John
died, but her father John Alexander Nelson, his son, had later told her
of the incident. [Correction: Henrietta was born two years after John
Nelson's death]."
