Alfred Birmingham Mulligan was a native of Beaufort District, S.C., was the sole
support of his mother, grandmother, and sisters from the time he was fifteen
years old. Prior to the Civil War he had a grocery business in Charleston. At
the beginning of the war he raised and equipped a company of cavalry with his
own money and moved his mother and sisters to a house in Spartanburg. He served
in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia during the war, then returned to
South Carolina to ultimately make his home in Spartanburg. This volume includes
primarily the letters which he wrote to his family, with additional chapters
containing a writeup of the Mulligan family by the Captain's daughter, Florence
Mulligan Boyd, a brief history of the battles in Virginia in which he
participated from May to October 1864, and a roll of the members of his company.
Editorial notes accompany the letters so that readers will understand the
references to events or happenings of historical significance.
