Here is a tribute taken from the Clemson Oconean Year book 1903`
           HAMPTON
Another hero passed away
Gone over the great divide
he so fearlessly wore the gray
Went out with the lethal tide;
And the mild eyes closed on the land he loved
While we watched with bared breath;
And the gray head bowed 'neath the silent stroke
Of the reaper whose name is Death

Gone,Gone;he's gone ! our leader brave
Our hearts reach out for thee!
Our land ,you risked your life to save
With Jackson Bragg and Lee
A people's love was his sole reward,
And a hero's name his crown:
but his life so pure,shall still endure
Long after he laid it down.

The veterans'hearts are stunned with grief-
The noble men in grey
They mourn because the falle chief
No more to them will say;
"Come boys ,Ill lead;who'll follow me?.
Then onwith qiuckene breath
Their fiery steeds meant victory,
There flashing sabers death!

He lived to prove what man can be
When yeilded up o God;
A rare type of nobility
Too seldom us llowed.
He died to pay a stern nature's debt
And left a vacant place;
Yet still we see his memory,
His calm illuminated face.

His life is closed;another day
Beams on his immortal
