Subject: Meeks-POWG-5\last From: gslat Date: December 19, 1999 MEEKS, MALCOLM 1849-1894 COFFEE Malcolm Meeks was born in Appling now Coffee County, June 22, 1849, a son of Merritt Meeks (Vol. III). He was married April 13, 1874, to Elizabeth Tanner, born April 22, 1858, daughter of Elijah Tanner (Vol. 111). They had twelve children: 1. Abegail b. May 1, 1875, m. Phillip Newbern. 2. Laura b. Nov. 28,1876, m. Leonard Burkett. 3. Melvin b. Feb. 24, 1878, m. Vivian Bruce, dau. of Silas J. 4. Elisha F. b. May 16, 1879, m. Penny Meeks, (1st cou, dau.of Hymrick. 5. Malcolm b. July 30, 1880, died July 15, 1896. 6. Mary Ann (Mae) b. Mar. 3, 1882, Levi Screven Cole. 7. George b. Jan. 1, 1884, died July 24, 1903; never m. 8. Charles S. b. Feb. 11, 1885, m. Elmira Wilcox, dau. of Thos & Lydia. 9. Albert b. July 26,1887, died March 16, 1900. 10. Gray b. Sept. 9,1889, m. Ruby Mattox, dau. of Bankston E.; 2nd Mrs. Alma G. Tanner. 11. Maggie b. Nov. 7, 1891, m. Joseph S. Starling. 12. Elizabeth b. Nov. 13,1893, m. John R. Gardner. Malcolm Meeks was a member of Union Baptist Church near Nicholls, Coffee Co., and was an ordained minister, serving a number of churches as pastor in Coffee County and in adjoining counties. He served several years as Moderator of the Smyrna Baptist Association. He was a member of the Masonic order, receiving his degrees in 1872 in Satilla Lodge, No. 163, then located at Kirkland station but now in Pearson. He was demitted Aug. 11, 1883; subsequent membership not traced. He served as a member of the Coffee County Board of Education 1886-1892, then served 1892-1894 as County School Com missioner. He resigned the office in April, 1894, due to his failing health, and died Sept. 25, 1894. His son, Melvin, was elected County School Commissioner in May 1900, and held the office many years. Rev. Meeks' home and farm was located about three miles northeast of Nicholls. His widow died nearly forty years later, on March 7, 1934. She was buried by her husband in the Meeks Cemetery in Nicholls. MEEKS, CHARLES C. (p. 181): The name of the son-in-law, C. W. Dedge, should have read Calvin Warren Dedge, instead of Charles Warren Dedge. MEEKS, HYMRICK (p.199): The name of the second wife of the son, Charles F. Meeks, should have read "Sudie Baker," not "Sudie Baer". MEEKS, CHARLES W. (p.204): He was a member of Satilla Lodge No. 163, F. & A.M., now located in Pearson, Ga. He became a Mason there in 1865, and was demitted in 1870. No further lodge record known. MEEKS, MERRITT (p.205): He was a member of Satilla Lodge, No. 163, F. & A.M., now located at Pearson. He received his degrees in 1865, and appears last on roll 1871. MEEKS, HYMRICK. (p.205): (1) He and his wife had another daughter who should be added to the list of children, viz: Louisa, born 1828, married James McKinnon, she being his third wife. (2) The Compiler is advised by one or two aged descendants that this Hymrick Meeks was not a brother of Charles C. Meeks (Vol. l) but rather a first cousin. MEEKS, JOHN. (p.281): The caption dates should have read 1827-1863 instead of 1827-1884. MEEKS, HYMRICK - VOLS.11 & III: In connection with the Additions and Corrections on the wives of the Hymrick Meeks in Vols. 11 & 111, Mr. Clyde Hooks furnished the following information he observed when conducting his research: "There were three marriages of someone named Hymrick Meeks during the 1880's. I knew who one was but had no idea who the other two were". (1) Neither marriage was mentioned by Ward in his "History of Coffee County", nor were they mentioned by Judge Huxford in his sketches. (2) Both ladies were widows of men who had died during the War Between the States. (3) Both ladies waited a long time before marrying a second time. (Eighteen years and Twenty years.) (4) Both ladies were widowed a second time, after short marriages. (Six years and Nine years.) (5) Both ladies were buried in a cemetery where their first husband's parents were buried. MEEKS, HYMRICK - VOL.111: (1) Hymrick did not die about 1875, and Cytha, his wife, did not survive him. (2) Hymrick and Cytha moved to Ware County after the 1860 census and were living in Ware during the 1870 and 1880 censuses. Cytha probably died soon after the 1880 census. (3) Hymrick married second in Coffee County on January 8, 1882, Barbara (Burkett) Denton, born August 8, 1839, daughter of Bartillery Burkett (Vol.III) and widow of Joshua Thomas Denton (Vol.V). The ceremony was performed by his nephew-in-law, Calvin Warren Dedge. (4) Hymrick died January 8, 1888, in Coffee County. He and Cytha are buried in marked graves, without dates, in the Moore Cemetery, in Ware County. Her name is spelled Cytha, and not Sytha, on her grave marker. (5) Barbara (Burkett) Denton Meeks died November 4, 1914, and is buried in the Burkett Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.
