Subject: Meeks-POWG-4 From: gslat Date: December 19, 1999 MEEKS, JOHN 1827-1884 WARE John Meeks was born in Emanuel County, July 27, 1827, son of Hymrick and Sytha Meeks (Vol.III). He was married Oct. 14, 1850, to Frances Douglas, daughter of Alexander and Dicy Douglas (Vol.II). She was born in Appling County, Feb. 18, 1832. They had the following children: 1. America b. Sept. 14, 1851, died March 18, 1863. 2. Sythia b. Fab. 5, 1853, died June 24, 1855. 3. John Alexander b. Mar. 14, 1854, m. 1st. MaryJane Moore, dau. of Elias; 2nd. Mary L. Thompson, dau. of John A. 4. Mary b. Jan. 31, 1855, m. Elisha Moore. 5. Ellen b. June 11, 1861, m. Elias Moore. John Meeks lived in the north part of Ware County. He died April 4, 1863. His widow later married Merritt Meeks, a cousin (Vol.III), but had no further issue. Merritt Meeks died July 16, 1884, and Mrs. Meeks remained a widow until her death Feb. 4, 1913. She and her first husband were burried in the Meeks Cemetery in Coffee County. MEEKS, REDDING G. 1841-1912 COFFEE Redding G. Meeks was born Feg. 24, 1841, in Appling County, son of Willoughby Meeks. He married in 1859, Eliza Ann Turner, both Dec. 15, 1839, daughter of Elijah and Emily Tanner (Vol-IV). They had the following children: 1. Mary Jane b. Feb. 27, 1860, m. Bartillery Burkett. 2. Elizabeth b. April, 1862, m. John A. Waters, Feb. 27, 1877. 3. John W. b. Aug. 9, 1864, m. Mary Jane Holton. 4. Berrien b. Dec. 12, 1867, m. Ella Colo. 5. Emma Jane b. Apr. 29, 1869, m. Benjamin Thomas. 6. Chariton S. b. Nov. 17, 1872, died single Dec. 27, 1896. 7. Martha Jane b. June 25, 1875, m. W.M. Tanner. 8. Nola b. Nov. 24, 1880, m. Council Street. 9. Silas b. Jan. 7, 1888, m. Christina Sapp. Mr. Meeks enlisted in Co. "F", I I th Georgia Battalion, C.S.A., May 1, 1862; he transferred to Co. "F", 47th Georgia Regiment, May 12, 1862. He was wounded and at home on wounded furlough at the close of the war. He drew a Confederate pension in his later years. Mr. Meeks was a member for several years of Satilla Lodge, No. 163, F. & A.M. He received his degrees there in 1865, and appears last on roll 1871. He and his wife were members of Elim Primitive Baptist Church in Coffee County. Mrs. Meeks died Feb. 21, 1901 and was buried in the Meeks Cemetery near Elim Church. Mr. Meeks afterwards married Miss Rena J. Floyd but had no further issue. He died Jan. 11, 1912, and was buried by his first wife. MEEKS, WILLOUGHBY. 1818-1865 BACON Willoughby Meeks was born Nov. 30, 1818, in Emanuel County, son of Charles C. Meeks (Vol. 1). He was married in 1836 to Elizabeth Taylor, born May 1, 1821, daughter of James Taylor (Vol. 1). They had eleven children, viz: 1. Angel b. June 20, 1837, m. Benj. Teston. 2. Redding G. b. Feb. 24, 1841, m. Eliza Tanner, dau. of Elijah. 3. Lavina b. Oct. 16, 1842, m. James M. Taylor (son of John Van Taylor). 4. Charles W. b. Jan. 12, 1844, died single Oct. 22,1863; killed by C.S.A. patrols. 5. Amanda b. March 8, 1845, m. William W. Taylor (son of John and Amanda). 6. Mary b. Nov. 8, 1846, m. Marion Cothern. 7. James ("Mack") b. Oct. 27, 1847, cripple; died single, May 8, 1918. 8. Willoughby, Jr. b. Mar. 25, 1849, m. Jincy Jane Taylor, dau. of John and Amanda. 9. Lydia b. June 10, 1850, m. Ezekiel Teston. 10. Eliza Jane b. May 1, 1854, m. Tarlton Taylor. 11. Burrell b. April 1, 1860, m. America Cothren. Willoughby Meeks lived in the southwestern portion of Appling County near the Coffee County line, the portion they lived in now being Bacon County. He died May 6, 1865. His wife died Dec. 11, 1902.
