Subject: Meeks-POWG-3 From: gslat Date: December 19, 1999 MEEKS, CHARLES WESLEY. 1840-1898 COFFEE Charles Wesley Meeks was born in Appling, now Coffee County, Feb. 24, 1840, youngest son of his parents, Charles C. Meeks and wife (Vol. b. He married in 1861, Lucy Moore, born March 15, 1843, daughter of Elias and Hester Moore. To them were born ten children (three others died in infancy, unnamed). The ten children were: 1. Eliza Ann b. Jan. 12, 1862, m. Thomas Lee. 2. Elias b. Nov. 23, 1863, m. Priscilla Denton, dau. of John T. 3. Rowan b. March 3, 1865, m. Catherine Bennett, dau. of Richard and Rachel. 4. Hester Ann b. Jan. 8, 1868, m. W. M. Thompson. 5. Elisha B. b. Sept. 9, 1869, died single June 18, 1884. 6. Daniel Hamrick b. May 1, 1876, m. Rilla Bagley, dau of John H. 7. Tennessee b. June 27, 1878, m. H. W. (Jeff) Bennett. 8. Lydia b. Jan. 31, 1881, m. Daniel F. Hinson. 9. Mattie M. b. Sept. 19, 1883, m. T. P. (Kit) Lee. 10. John Wesley b. Aug. 22, 1887, died young. Mr. Meeks and his wife were charter members of Elim Primitive Baptist Church near their home, and he is credited with having built the present church-house there, He served as an ordained deacon of the church for some years prior to his death, Nov. 28, 1898. He inherited the old home-place of his parents, and lived there until his death. In connection with his farming activities he also operated a country store on his farm, a sawmill and cotton-ginnery. He and his wife reared several orphan children, among them the children of his sister and husband, Gray and Mary Ann Roberts. Mrs. Meeks survived her husband nearly thirty-two years, and died June 10, 1930. She and her husband were buried at Elim Church. MEEKS, EDWARD SIMPSON. 1831-1905 COFFEE Edward Simpson Meeks was born in, -Appling County, Aug. 30, 1831, son of Charles C. Meeks (Vol. I). He was married in January, 1855, to Mary, daughter of Gray S. Roberts (Vol. I). She was born Jan. 2, 1835, in present Atkinson County. Born to them were eleven children, viz: 1. Sarah Ann b. 1856, m. Aaron Giddens. 2. Charles Wesley b. 1857, m. Mary Pafford. 3. Mary Jane b. 1858, m. Mitchell Paulk. 4. Amanda b. 1860, died Dec. 15, 1869. 5. Lydia b. 1862, died young. 6. John b. 1865, m. Mary Powell, dau. of Wm. C. 7. Gray b. 1866, m. Gertrude Gaskin, dau. of David E. 8. Jesse M. b. 1870, m. Mary Jane Morris, dau. of Thomas. 9. Eliza Ann b. 1873. m. Thomas H. Morris, son of Ben. 10. Laura b. 1877, m. Lester Bradfrod. 11. Lillie b. 1881, m. W. H. Powell, son of John W. Mr. Meeks died at his home in Coffee County, March 14, 1905, and his wife died there, Oct. 6, 1907. They were buried at Elim. Church. MEEKS, HYMRICK, Sr. 1806-1876 APPLING Hymrick Meeks of Appling County, was born in North Carolina, May 3, 1806, a son of Francis Meeks, Jr., and brother of Charles C. Meeks (see Vol, I). He came with his parents to Emanuel County, Ga., in boyhood, and he and his brother, Charles C. Meeks, with their respective families, moved to Appling County and located about two miles north of the present town of Nicholls. Mr. Meeks married Sytha, daughter of John Taylor, one of the first settlers of Appling County (Vol.1b. She was born in 1808 in this state. To Mr. and Mrs. Meeks were born: 1. John b. 1830, m. Frances Douglas, dau. of Alex. 2. Mary b. 1834, m. William Douglas, son of Alex. 3. Tempy b. 1836, m. J. H. (Jack) Thompson. 4. Charles W. b. 1837, died single. 5. Cynthia J. b. 1840, m. John Deen. Record is found in Appling County of a deed of gift from John Taylor "to my son-in-law, Hymrick Meeks", dated April 16, 1850, conveying Lot of land No. 460, 5th district of Appling County, and by a separate instrument he gave to Mrs. Meeks, his daughter, two slaves (Deed Book ABC, page 480, Appling County). Mr. Meeks died at his home in Appling County about 1875, and his wife died soon after. They were buried in the cemetery at Camp Ground Methodist Church of which they were members. Census Refs: 1840, 1850, 1860, Appling. MEEKS, MERRITT. 1826-1884 COFFEE Merritt Meeks, son of Charles C. and Lydia Meeks (Vol.1), was born in Emanuel County, April 29, 1826. He came to Appling County with his parents, and was married there to Mary Ann Morrison, daughter of Hugh Morrison of Montgomery County and a sister of Rev. Daniel Morrison of Appling and Ware counties. She was born May 10, 1827. To Mr. and Mrs. Meeks were born eight children: 1. Malcolm b. June 22, 1849, m. Elizabeth Tanner, Apr. 13, 1874, dau. of Elijah. 2. John J. b. Feb. 13, 1851, m, Rebecca Douglas, Mar. 11, 1877, dau. of Robt. Jr. 3. Mary Jame b. Sept. 3, 1853, m. Moses Davis, son of Joel. 4. Merritt ("Bud") b. Mar. 2, 1855, m. Elmina, Waters, dau. of James F. 5. Hymrick M. b. Sept. 22, 1859, m. Mattie Hall, dau. of Hardy. 6. Daniel b. June 23, 1862, m. Frances C. Gaskins, dau. of Joel. 7. Charles Francis b. April 1, 1865, m. Linnie Duren, dau. of Richard. 8. Mary Ann b. Jan. 18, 1868, m. Joshua Dent, son of William. Mr. Meeks was a private in Company "I", 4th Georgia Calvary in the Confederate Army, enlisting in 1863 and serving until the close. He was a resident of Appling County until the creation of Coffee County in 1854, when he was cut into the new county. He served as a Justice of Peace in the 1170th district, Coffee County, 1858-1861. Merritt Meeks, after the death of his first wife, married Mrs. Frances Meeks, widow of his cousin, John Meeks, and daughter Of Alexander and Dicy Douglas; there was no issue of that marriage. She was born Feb. 18, 1832, and died Feb. 4, 1913. The son. Malcolm, became a Baptist minister and served as County School Commissioner of Coffee County. Another son, H. M. Meeks, became a very prominent Baptist minister of Coffee County. and was Clerk and later Moderator for years, of the Smyrna Baptist Association. Mr. and Mrs. Merritt Meeks are buried in the Meeks Cemetery near Nicholls, Coffee County. They were charter members of Union Baptist Church in Coffee County. Mr. Meeks was a member of Satilla. Lodge No. 163, F. & A. M., receiving his degrees in 1873. He died a member. Census Refs: 1850.
