Subject: Meeks-POWG-2 From: gslat Date: December 19, 1999 MEEKS, WILLIAM FRANCIS 1829-1891 ATKINSON William Francis Meeks, a son of Charles C. Meeks (Vol. 1), was born on April 29, 1829, in Emanuel County, and was brought as a little child by his parents to Appling County where he grew up. He was married March 20, 1851, to Narcissus Lott, daughter of Daniel and Lucinda Lott (q. v.). She was born April 1st, 1833, in Telfair (now Coffee) County. To Mr. and Mrs. Meeks were born nine children: 1. Martha Elizabeth b. January 14, 1853, m. Benajah Pearson. 2. Charles Bulloch b. April 14, 1854, died October 16, 1870. 3. Narcissus b. October 22, 1856, m. James Levi Courson, son of Duncan. 4. William F., Jr. b. March 5, 1858, m. Ann Jane Kirkland, daughter of Elisha. 5. Lucinda b. March 9, 1860, m. Dr. J. B. Bagley of Ware Co. 6. Lydia Ann b. January 28, 1862, m. Rowan Bagley. 7. Ardelia b. October 16, 1864, died single, January 24. 1946. 8. Hester Ann b. October 17, 1866, died October 23, 1870. 9. Daniel A. b. October 1, 1870, died single, August 24, 1931. Mr. Meeks was reared in Appling County, and after marriage was cut off into Coffee County. The same year (1854) he acquired Lot 202, 7th district of Clinch County, from Elias Moore, and moved there and lived there for about fifteen years. He moved to a farm in the southern part of Coffee (now Atkinson) County where he lived until his death May 22, 1891. Mrs. Meeks died April 29, 1897. They were buried at Antioch Church in present Atkinson County. Mr. Meeks was a private in Co. "I", 4th Georgia Cavalry Regiment, Confederate Army, enlisting in 1863 and serving until the close of the War. Census References: 1860, Clinch; 1870, Coffee. MEEKS, HYMRICK 1822-1894 COFFEE Hymrick Meeks, a son of Charles C. and Lydia (Vol. 1), was born in Emanuel County, February 8, 1822, and died at his home in eastern part of Coffee County February 6, 1894. He was married November 9, 1844, to Martha, a daughter of Stafford Davis (q. v.). She was born July 8, 1825, and died at the family home in Coffee County July 20, 1884. To Mr. and Mrs. Meeks were born: 1. Lydia b. September 21, 1845, m. A. F. Thomas. 2. Merritt b. January 13, 1847, m. Emily Tanner, daughter of Green. 3. Penelope b. January 22, 1849, m. B. H. (Bunk) Tanner, Jr. 4. Stafford A. b. February 25, 1851, m. Missouri Waters. 5. Martha Jane b. November 16, 1853, m. (1) Jack Cady (2) W. J. Smith (3) Baldy Carter. 6. Sarah Ann b. May 1, 1856, m. Monroe Tanner, son of Elijah. 7. Charles F. b. December 2, 1859, m. (1) Dorcas Douglas, daughter of Robert and Margaret (2) Sudie Baer. 8. Hymrick b. November 7, 1861, m. Elizabeth Kirkland, daughterof Zenus. 9. William Bryant b. February 18, 1866, m. Harriet Williams, daughter of George J. 10. Elisha b. January 16, 1870, died single June 18, 1884. Mr. Meeks served in Co. "I", 4th Georgia Cavalry Regiment, in the Confederate, Army, enlisting at its organization in 1863, and serving until the close. Mr. Meeks died at his home near Nicholls in Coffee County, February 6, 1894, and was buried in the Meeks Cemetery. His will dated July 3, 1886, was probated November 5, 1894, and bequeated his estate to the children named above except that the son, Stafford, was dead and his share was bequeathed to his five children.
