There is quite a bit of early info available through the South Carolina Room at the Charleston County Library and the SC Historical Society. The house is NOT open to the public! I wish it were - I would love to take my daughters to see where their ancestor lived and is buried. The first Landgrave Thomas Smith (who inherited the plantation through his second wife, Sabina De Vignon, widow of John D'Arsens, Seigneur de Wernhaut) was my 8th great-grandfather, and is buried on the plantation. His son (Landgrave Thomas Smith, II - whose picture is on page 11 of the "Medway" book by Virginia Christian Beach) was my 7th great-grandfather. My line descends through his daughter, Sabina SMITH who married another Thomas SMITH. Are you a descendant? I hope to hear from you.
