Subject: McKay/McCay/McCoy From: Donna Sarchet Date: February 11, 1999 Cindy-- Regarding your recent post to the list on McCoy/Kay families, I have a question for you: Have you ever encountered McCoy and McCay/McKay to be interchangeable for the same family? As improbable as this may sound, I have noticed in looking at Rev. War pension abstracts (Virgil White's series) that McKay and McCoy are cross-listed since several veterans with these names used both spellings in their pension applications. Although I am not a McKay, etc. descendant, I am interested in this family in that a Daniel McKay (family Bible spells it "Mackay") married into my Stanley family in SC. Daniel McKay was a Rev. soldier from NY who ended up in SC. The McKays and Stanleys were associated in Spartanburg Co. and then moved together to old Pendleton Dist (the part that became Anderson Co.). They then moved into GA together in the early 1800s. Then, one of the Stanley branches moved up to Arkansas; there were "McCoys" who intermarried with this branch and moved with them. I have wondered if this particular McCoy family is really part of the McCay/McKay family of SC.
