McCLAIN, SOLOMON.	1812-1868	APPLING

Solomon McClain was born in Barnwell District, S. C., in 1812, a son of 
Solomon McClain and wife, Laney, of that district and a grandson of Solomon 
and Mary McClain also of Barnwell District. He came with his parents to 
Appling County, Georgia, in his boyhood and after their deaths a few years 
later he was taken in charge by his aunt, Mrs. Charity Southwell, and 
reared by her and her husband Edward, of Appling County. It was in Appling 
that he met and married Emeline, born 1821 in Georgia, daughter of James 
and Cynthia Evers Strickland of that county. To Solomon and Emeline were 
born ten children, viz:

1. Celete Ann	b. 1841, m. 1st. William Turner; 2nd. Jack Pomeroy.
2. Lethy Ann	b. 1842, never m. Died 1912.
3. Henry Raford	b. 1843, m. Malinda Elizabeth Strickland, dau. of John.
4. Serilda Adellne 	b. 1845, m. 1st. Robert Touchton; 2nd. David Reddish.
5. Emaline (Emma Jane)	b. 1847, m. Wade H. Coleman, Nov. 26, 1870.
6. David R.	b. 1849, m. Ist. Sarah Smith of Chaxlton County; 2nd. Mary Jane 
Palmer, 1880,
									In Luraville. Florida.
7. Eliza Caroline	b. 1851, died 1854.
8. Laney Ann	b. 1853, m. Leonard Hickox.
9. Georgia Ann	b. 1856, m. lst. Reddick Wainwright; 2nd. Mahoney Martin.
10. Charles Leonard	b. 1858,	m. 1st. Theodosia Palmer, Dec. 24, 1879; 2nd. 
Mary Ellen Hart, Sept. 29, 1890, in
								Suwannee County, Florida.

About 1867, Solomon McClain dissapeared from his home in Appling County and 
it was never known what became of him. His wife and children about 1875 
removed to Charlton County where they located near Traders Hill. Mrs. 
McClain died there Nov. 6, 1895, and was buried in Traders Hill Cemetery.
Judge Guy M. McClain, County Judge of LaFayette County, Fla., is a grandson 
of Solomon and Emeline McClain and son of Charles L. and Mary Ellen Hart 
McClain.

McLEAN, WILLIAM.			1828-1900 	ECHOLS

William McLean was born in 1828 in Ware County, son of John and Martha 
McLean, and grandson of John McLean, Revolutionary Soldier of Ware County, 
who drew land as such in the 1838 Georgia Land Lottery. William, the 
subject, married three times. His first wife was Matilda Kelly, born 1831 
in Appling County, daughter of John and Sallie Kelly of Lowndes County, 
natives of South Carolina. They had four children:

1. James	b. 1850, m. Anna Cowart, dau. of Hillery.
2. John E.	b. 1852, m. Sarah Permenter, dau. of James.
3. Margaret	b. 1854, m. James Johnson.
4. Thomas	b. 1860, m. Jemima Kelly (Ist c.], dau. of Wm.

The first wife died at the birth of her fourth child and Mr. McLean then 
married Martha Padgett. born 1843 in Ware (now Echols) County, daughter of 
William Padgett (Vol.I). To them were born six children, viz:

5. Henry	b. 1863, m. Queen Swilley, dau. of James S.
6. Sirmans	b. 1865, died single, age about 21.
7. Mary	b. 1868, m. James Kinsey.
8. Lucy	b. 1869, died young.
9. Roxie	b. 1871, m, John Bryant,
10, Franklin	b. 1874, m. Sarah Griffis.

The second wife died about 1885 and Mr, McLean then married Mrs. Martha 
Johnson but had no further issue. He was a member of Antioch Primitive 
Baptist Church in Echols County. He died about 1900 and was buried in the 
Carter cemetery in Echols County.
Note: The family name uniformly appears as "McLean" In early records, and 
the son, John E. McLean who lived in Clinch County, spelled the name that 
way. However, some of his descendants and also some of his brother's 
descendants have in later years been spelling the name as "McClain", 
"McLain" and McLaine"'.
Mrs. Matilda McLean was received -by baptism June 11, 1859, into Bethel 
Privitive Baptist Church, Echols County. She died a member.

McCLAIN, HENRY R.	1843-1895 	CHARLTON

Henry Raiford McClain was born Sept. 22, 1843, in Appling County, son of 
Soloman McClain (Vol. III). After the disappearance of his father in the 
1850s he moved with his mother, brothers and sisters to Charlton County. He 
was married in 1866 to Malinda Elizabeth Strickland, daughter of John and 
Dicy Ogden Strickland of Appling County. She was born in Appling County, 
March 15, 1847. She and her husband had ten children, viz:

1 . John Calvin	b. Mar. 1867,	m. Ollie Rebecca Raulerson, 1889.
2. Laura Georgia	b. Feb. 22,1870,	m. Benj. Brown Mallon, Mar. 24, 1893.
3. Eliza Carolina	b. Apr. 16, 1872,	m. Thomas J. Howard, Apr. 1885.
4. David Elijah	b. 1875,	died 1882.
5. FlorenceMalinda 	b. July 6, 1876,	m. C. A. Martin, July 14,1907.
6. Matthew Marion	b. Nov. 24,1879,	m. Georgia Carswell and others.
7. Agnes Viola	b. Feb. 10, 1882,	m. Marion McClain (cousin) c. 1895.
8. Annie Belle(twin)	b. July 11, 1888,	m. Chas. T. Wesley, Nov. 5, 1904.
9. Jeannette (twin)	b. July 11, 1888,	m. Andrew J. Coleman, Oct. 19,1901
10. Mary Belle	b. Aug. 6,1889,	died single, July 29, 1912.

After marriage Mr. McClain lived in Appling County near Odum, and farmed. 
After the birth of the third child he moved back to Charlton County where 
he lived until his death, Sept. 9,1895. Hewas buried in the cemetery at 
Corinth Primitive Baptist Church in Charlton County, beside.his son, David 
Elijah McClain. Mrs. McClain later moved to Waycross where she lived until 
her death Jan. 7, 1933; she was buried in Kettle Creek cemetery near 
Waycross.
Mr. McClain served in the Confederate Army from Charlton County. He 
enlisted Sept. 9, 1861. The published Company Roll shows he was home on 
sick furlough Oct. 31, 1862. No further record.
