Subject: MARY PRIOLEAU BRYAN, daughter of SAMUEL PRIOLEAU From: ELIZABETH RUSSO Date: January 14, 2000 I need help determining the genealogy of MARY PRIOLEAU, m. I am trying to sort out a real estate transaction between MARY BRYAN, widow of HUGH BRYAN, and daughter of SAMUEL PRIOLEAU, and discover that while I have several MARY PRIOLEAUs in my database, and several SAMUEL PRIOLEAUs in my database, I do not have a MARY, daughter of SAMUEL who would have married HUGH BRYAN. Sorting all this out will help me, I hope, connect up my HUTCHINSON, CARNE, and DUBOIS ancestors, along with BONNEAU and ELFE and a few others--most of whom were Charleston carpenters/cabinetmakers/builders living on or close to Queen street (which I hope to see in all its April glory this year!) These folks were practicing their trade c. 1750s to 1790s. Here are two transactions tying some of these folks together: Book VV, p. 400 MARY BRYAN, widow of HUGH BRYAN, to THOMAS 17 & 18 Apr. 1758 HUTCHINSON, cabinet maker, of Charleston, for L & R L. 1375 currency, part of lots #181 & #198 in Charleston, bounding W 117-1/2 ft. on Friend Street; N 72 ft. 3 in. on part of lot #181; E on RICHARD LAMBTON & CATHERINE GREENLAND; S on part of lot #198; with the tenement erected o S. end. Whereas SAMUEL PRIOLEAU, gentleman, of Charleston, owned part of lots #181 & #198, bounding W 235 ft. on Friend Street; N 72 ft. 3 in. on Broad Street; E on RICHARD LAMBTON & CATHERINE GREENLAND; S on part of lot #198 belonging to GEORGE ROUPELL; with the dwelling house erected on S. end, fronting Friend Street; & by will dated 25 Oct. 1751 bequeathed the dwelling house & the land N to Broad Street to his daughter MARY BRYAN; now she sells the S part of her land to HUTCHINSON. Witnesses: SAMUEL PRIOLEAU, ROBERT WILLIAMS, JR. Before WILLIAM BURROWS, JP. WILLIAM DOCKWRAY, D.R. Book V-V, p. 405 MARY BRYAN, widow of HUGH BRYAN, to THOMAS 17 & 18 APR. 1758 ELFE, cabinet maker, of Charleston, for L. 575 L&R currency, the N part of lot #181 in Charleston, bounding W 117-1/2 ft. on Friend Street; N. 72 ft. 3 in. on Broad Street; E on RICHARD LAMBTON; S on other part lot #181. Whereas SAMUEL PRIOLEAU...[same as above] bequeathed the house & the land.... to his daughter MARY BRYAN; now she sells the N part of her land to ELFE. Witnesses: SAMUEL PRIOLEAU, ROBERT WILLIAMS, JR. Before William Burrows, JP.
