Subject: RE: Martintown From: Galinahist Date: May 01, 1999 Martintown no longer exists as a town. Following Shermans rampage through the state, and the decimation of the people, most all of the residents of Martintown packed up and moved to Brazil. Martintown itself was out of Shermans path, being just north of North Augusta, going towards Edgefield. It was the birthplace of Gen. Longstreet, and was a trading community originally for the traders and indians coming down the Savannah river on the Georgia side to cross at the rapids. Chapman's book on the History of Edgefield County which I have reprinted and is also available on CD-ROM has a chapter on the Martins of Martintown, as well as most of the other early residents of that area.
