State Sumter District SC Deed Bk D p. 26 State of South Carolina Sumter District Know all men by these presents, that I William Doughty Junior of the State and District aforesaid, Planter, for and in consideration of the many faithful services rendered unto me by my mulatto wench by the name of Hetty, as well as of the sum of five shillings to me in hand paid at and before the sealing and delivery of these presents, by the said mulatto wench, Hetty, the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge, have granted sold, release and confirm, unto the mulatto wench HETTY, and to her three mulatto children, named, EDWARD, SARAH, and SUSAN, from a state of slavery and bondage, and making them, by these presents, fully, absolutely, and forever free, in every sense, conception, and meaning of the word free; To have and to hold their freedom, together with all and singular the rights, priviledges and advantages belonging to a state of freedom, unto the said HETTY, EDWARD, SARAH, and SUSAN adn the issue of their bodies, their full and absolute freedom against myself and my heirs, adn against every person whomsoever lawfully claiming, or to claim the said Hetty, Edward, Sarah, and Susan or any of them.
