There is a branch (and a marsh) in present day Dillon County (formerly Marion County) named Monoah Branch. It is not shown on the USGS topographical maps, nor any other maps I have seen. It is shown on some plats for lands granted to Benjamin Harrelson in the 1780's in what became Marion District. A local resident further verified the name of the branch for me last year. I had searched the whole neighborhood for years for someone who knew the name of that branch, finally finding an old farmer who told me, without coaching, "it's Monoah, ain't it?" So I've spent some time wondering if that's an Indian name, or perhaps the name of an Indian trader who worked this area before it was settled by Europeans, or just what it might be. "Manoah" Fitzpatrick, mentioned by Steve Coker in his recent posting, is the only other reference I've ever seen to that or a similar word. Any ideas, anybody? Steve?
