Is something amiss at rootsweb this evening?

Actually, something is (or was) amiss at AOL.

For awhile today, they were bouncing 100% of their incoming mail as "user
unknown". As an exercise, you can use your imagination to kinda guess what that
did to RootsWeb.

Completely broke our main list server.

We've just finished cleaning up the rubble, and it will probably be a couple of
hours before we have our queues completely cleared.

Anyway, Tim, Dale, Karen, and I have just had a really rotten day. Sorry about
any mess that managed to find its way out to the lists.

For what it's worth... *my* email load hasn't seemed to drop any from all of

It's doing 100% of the users, but only for a few minutes at a time.

Unfortunately, 10 minutes of AOL bouncing 100% of the mail we send them is about
enough to completely kill our servers. ):

Most AOL users probably don't even know they're losing mail ... -B

Brian, it may be "beating a dead horse", but this kind of problem comes up every
month or so. Is there ANYTHING we, you, or anyone, can do to get AOL to clean
up their act? Dang it, they have probably over 10 million users by now and they
certainly cause lots of problems for everyone on the net/web. I hate to let off
steam, but after a while it becomes tiresome, as a Listowner, having to deal
with the incompetence of the people at AOL. I can assure you that the MAJORITY
of problems I have with my Lists and subscribers involves AOL users. I AM NOT
MALIGNING AOL USERS !!!!! I am criticizing AOL itself !!!!! For those of you
who are AOL users, please note that distinction.

Your message said that email was being returned as "user unknown", yet I STILL
get loads of "bounces" daily saying that the users mailbox are full, when I KNOW
that is not true. Why can't the folks there at AOL find someone who is
competent to set up the software/hardware correctly?

George,
Until a sufficient number of AOL users rise up in protest, deluge their
postmaster with complaints and threaten class action remedies, you can bet your
stripes nothing will be done. AOL is a cash cow and as long as the milk keeps
flowing, no one will "udder" a word.
