Recently I ran into a gentleman about 75 years of age with my last surname.
He knew my grandfather. This gentleman told me that his father told him that
he and my gf were connected and that they had second cousins in the upstate of
SC. I also have a cousin that said his gf said we had cousins living in the
upstate (before I knew of this other). His gf and my gf were brothers. I can
go back to the early 1800's with both lines and there doesn't seem to be a
connection, however, my uncle who died last year in his 70's had a middle name
of Clifton and this gentleman's father had a middle name of Clifton. Both
families are early SC families. What do you make of this and if I know this
lineage

me - my father - gf - ggf - gggf
him - his father - gf - ggf - gggf.

How would my gf and his father be second cousins if there was no marriage from
his gggf and my gggf in our lines? What am I overlooking?

Is this just a coincidence or do you think I should pursue this?
