Subject: KENNEDY/BURGESS/DICKEY SC>NC From: JAYMCCARLEY Date: July 20, 1998 To All: I would appreciate any leads or information that anyone has on Rev. Samuel KENNEDY who "reportedly was a minister in Williamsburg, SC, (possibly of the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church) and/or John BURGESS SR, & Geo. DICKEY of Prince Parish. I am researching the KENNEDY families of Mecklenburg Co., NC. Among those were: Rev. Samuel KENNEDY and his wife Elizabeth. Rev. Sam d. 1796 without will. A 14 year, 100 pg. file of documents regarding his estate were found. But in among all of these items there is nothing to suggest who his family was or where he came from except 1 entry.. 1784: Samuel KENNEDY with John BURGESS, SR., Geo. Dickey of Prince Parish signs note for land for three hundred and forty one pounds sterling to John Scott and Robert McClintock. We have to think that John BURGESS, SR and George DICKEY were either good friends, upstanding citizens etc. for them to co-sign the note for Rev. Samuel. Then a notation was found in a book by one of the KENNEDY researcher's, giving us a clue as to where he may have come from. ""The Rev. Samuel Kennedy who came back to America, in 1782 and preached at Williamsburg, SC and about five years later moved to Mecklenburg Co., NC, where he later died."" Source: The book, "The Scotch-Irish in the Carolina's", by Billy Kennedy, 1997." (I have not seen the book, was given the abstract by another researcher) 1796: From the Probate file of Rev. Samuel KENNEDY 1784: Samuel KENNEDY with John BURGESS, SR., Geo. Dickey of Prince Parish signs note for land for three hundred and forty one pounds sterling to John Scott and Robert McClintock. There were 3 administrators for the estate within a year. Oct. 1796:Elizabeth (the widow) and Andrew SPROTT. Nov. 1796: William KENNEDY adm. pays Robt. McClintoch (the only record of a KENNEDY involved with Samuel in Meck., and this William may not have lived in Meck) Apr. 1797: Elizabeth ... and Adrew SPROTT have failed to execute the Adm. Ordered John H. ORR adm. estate of Sam'l KENNEDY. List of 20 Negro's, silver watch and L342.6.1 1/2 (This is a very large number of slaves for a NC KENNEDY to own, and we find no record in NC where he inherited or purchased them.) In 1797: Jacob ALEXANDER & William WIYLE were named guardian of Amelia Sophia KENNEDY, dau. of Rev. Samuel, and Nathaniel ALEXANDER named Guardian of Marcus T. C. KENNEDY. The children were very young, as in 1808 Marcus was allowed at age 16 to choose his own guardian, so he was b. 1792 and Amelia m. in 1810, and could be a year or 2 older than MTC. Even though the Rev. Samuel purchased his land in Meck in 1784, he may not have actually removed there until later. I am hoping that John BURGESS or Geo. DICKEY are from the Williamsburg area and that there may be a record somewhere of where Samuel KENNEDY served as a Minister, possibly Williamsburg Presbyterian. His son, Marcus Tulley Cicero KENNEDY is buried at Sugar Creek Presbyterian Cemetery in Meck.
