NC. both planters, 100 acres on a swamp called COWPEN PRONG including Nicholas Prince's improvement, PATENT FORMERLY GRNATED TO JOSEPH OATES nov. 19, 1764 Wit: Rich. Barfield, and Thomas Brown Ack ct. 1774." Can anyone tell me who this Joseph Oates may be. I do have an ancestor by that name he was born in Albemarle Precnict Perquimans County North Carolina 7/Aug/1697. I do believe it is highly possible that the one mentioned here is the same person. Now Joseph did have two grandchildren that moved from North Carolina to South Carolina but that was in pre-1801 and 1802. Samuel died in Fairfield in 1801, and Stephenson died in Darlington in 1817.
