I  am also working on a Johnson Family in Beaufort. They were from Ladies 
Island  not far from Brickyard plantation:

 John Johson b. 1741 married Rebecca Howard ,b.1741. 
their son, William Johnson b. 1782 married Elizabeth Whaley, b. 1783 on 
Edisto Island. 
They had a son, Dr. Joseph Ficking Johnson ,b. 1813 . and  many other 
children.

 Is it possible that  the Joseph Johnson you are working on was the brother 
to John Johnson?
