Subject: Joining the War effort From: John C Rigdon Date: March 28, 1998 In Georgia, particularly, many of the early companies filled up quickly and men traveled to other counties to find an opening to join. I have a "History of the 12th Alabama" which I've reprinted which is made up of men from Macon, Ga and Jewish merchants from Mobile. This regiment suffered quite a bit of abuse because of their ethnic make-up and having little political pull in Alabama. They were generally charged with following the army after the battles and burying the dead. Also, I don't consider White county and Green county so far removed at the time of the civil war. Greensboro was a major railroad stop for the east-west railroad. Was there also a north-south line that ran through Greensboro? There is a track there today, but was it in place at the start of the war?
