John Cunningham/McCluskey Ties in Abbeville Dist., SC prior to 1820 - Herbcunnin
Subject: John Cunningham/McCluskey Ties in Abbeville Dist., SC prior to 1820
From: Herbcunnin
Date: February 19, 1999

Have long sought the origin and ancestry of John Cunningham (my g-g-
grandfather). He arrived in Marion Co., TN with full family in ca. 1821. All
families, whose origin is known, associated with my Cunningham ancestors in
that area have been identified as having SC ties. Have seen several
Cunningham references in Abbeville District, SC prior to the 1820 period but
the following reference is of exceptional interest:

	"David Cunningham d 1793
John Cunningham Sr of record 1793 with Jos. McCleskey
                     John Cunningham Jr b 1785"

Would like any further information on this group of individuals as they
exhibit a number of potential matches with my ancestry.

The date of birth for the John Cunningham Jr in that grouping is a very close
match to my ancestor having the same name. Also, the listing showing "John
Cunningham Sr of record 1793 with Jos. McCleskey" has very special interest as
follows:

John Cunningham, my great-great-grandfather, settled in Marion Co., TN in ca.
1821 with his entire family. In ca. 1835, his son John D. Cunningham marries
Elizabeth McCluskey (my great-grandparents) of adjacent Franklin Co., TN and
daughter of George W. McCluskey, who is identified as having been born in SC.
In this period and earlier, a Joseph McCluskey Jr. and family were living in
Lincoln Co., TN which is immediately west of Franklin Co., TN. That McCluskey
family is shown to have originated from SC and had a son named George that is
a demographic match to my George W. McCluskey.

John Cunningham, my ancestor, exhibited a practice of giving his children
surnames as their middle name. One such name given to one of his children was
Henderson that has been identified as his wife's maiden name. Other surnames
used in naming his children, whose relationship to his family is unknown, are:
Davidson, Alexander, Montgomery, and Homes. Those family names should have
ties to SC if that is where he originated.

Any information that could provide any in sight to this family mystery would
be greatly appreciated.
