On the 1820 Census of Laurens Co, SC there are two JAMES HENDERSON. Either
could be the father of Hugh Mahathy/Mahaffey HENDERSON b 1814 as they both
have a male child under the age of 10 and Mahathy would have been age 6.

This is my first posting to this list. Can someone give me clues to the
connections of the early HENDERSONS in this county ? I believe that the Hugh
Mahaffey/Mahatha on the 1820 census may be the father of the mother of Hugh.
I also see a Kezziah HENDERSON listed in the LDS. Does anyone know about her
?
We were told that a mother or grandmother of Hugh M. HENDERSON was a Kezziah?

Here is more about what happened to James and his son Hugh M.:

Hugh Mahathy HENDERSON b 10 Aug 1814 Laurens Co,NC removed with father James?
to Gwinett Co, GA by 1830, m Mary "Polly" TINNY/BONDS, a Cherokee bef 1833,
moved to Jefferson Co, AL, had 200 a land on Black Warrior River in Coal
fields. Possibly took coal to Mobile on flatboats. Two sons Wm. & John Allen
died in CSA. Dau Nancy raped by soldiers 1862. Mahathy and son James sold land
moved to Double Springs,Winston Co,AL by 1863-4 where they signed loyalty
Oaths to US Govt for voting rights in 1867. Daughters married YOUNG, TURNER,
SIMMONS, AUSTIN, PARKER in Winston and Lawrence AL.

I have learned much more about the Alabama background of Hugh Mahathy
HENDERSON, great grandfather of my husband, Vernon Veston AUSTIN this week. I
found the old deeds for the 280 acres of land which was at Kimberly on U. S
Highway 31(it was Bear Meat Cabin Road back then). I saw the place on the
Black Warrior River at the Jefferson county line. The trees have grown back
since the days of the coal mines. There is a lumber company on the water
front, and little streets with old house trailers on the broken down streets
of Kimberly, the old coal miners places. It was a shame the HENDERSONS sold
out for less than $1000 and an ox wagon with four oxen, and because of the
impending Civil War, moved up into the dense forested mountains of the
neutral, Winston Co, AL which did not secede from the Union. Little did they
know that this property was to be so important in the future of the growth of
Birmingham, AL.
