Carol, I could be wrong but I believe these Rutherfords came to NC Rowan
Co first and then to Newberry Co.SC. Rutherfords married Lofton/ins and
visa versa in Frederick and Berkely Counties VA (old Frederick Co. is now
Jefferson Co. WV) in the 1740 to 60 period . The Loftons, Corzines,
Penningtons and some Rutherfords headed South (partly to escape the fierce
Indian raids in Western VA in the 1750s)
Rutherfords were key people in Western VA and bought and sold real estate
(Look for Northern Neck VA Warrents issued in the 1735s to 1760s to see
these names show up!) I amd working on the Lofton family in Newberry now
(just beginning) but I remember seeing Rutherfords wives to some of the
Loftons/ins and their brothers. William Lofton's will in Frederick Co. VA
includes giving things to a daughter who was called __?___ Rutherford.
Don't recall her name off the top of my head...can get it tho! Dick
