I am searching for information on the children of James and Elizabeth
Reid Aiken who came to the United States in 1779 from County Antrim
near Belfast, Ireland. They had 8 children:

Hugh
John: died 1835
Mary: born 1770
James: born 1773?-died April 1904
Margaret
William: born?-died 1831--William Sr. was a wealthy Charleston
merchant and the first president of the South Carolina Canal and Rail
Road Company. Aiken, S.C. is named after him. His son, William Jr.,
was elected Governor of S.C. in 1844.
Elizabeth: born 1743?-died 1803
David: born 1788

As a child, I remember my grandfather telling me that he had been
invited to some kind of celebration of the founding of Aiken , S.C.
because he was a descendent of the man Aiken was named after. My
grandfather's name was William Varnell Aiken. I believed until I began
to research, that we were direct descendants of the first William
Aiken. I now know that we are not descended from William because he
had only one child to live to be an adult and that was , William Jr.
William Jr. had only one child, Henrietta.

The only information I have on our line are the names and birthdates
of my great grandparents:

Samuel John Aiken: born Nov. 21, 1837-died Feb. 2, 1930
Martha Harper Aiken: born Oct. 30, 1868-died Feb.28 1928

I think some of these Aikens may have settled in the Fairfield County
area of South Carolina . Some may have migrated to Calhoun, Tennessee.

Any information that anyone has on any member of the Aiken family will
be greatly appreciated.
