Subject: INCIDENTS #49 From: ELIZABETH RUSSO Date: November 08, 1998 INCIDENTS AND CHARACTERS IN THE EARLY HISTORY OF METHODISM By The Reverend John Elmore DuBois Edited by Elizabeth A. DuBois (c) 1998 DuBois Publishing Co, Simsbury, Connecticut. All rights reserved. SIXTEEN [Cont.] On the day preceding the adjournment of the Conference, our President Elder, Rev. Mr. Pearson, told me that when I was on my horse, ready to start for home, if I would come by his room, he would tell me who would be our preacher. Here may arise a question with persons not familiar with the workings of our Annual Conference Cabinet, "Why be so particular about letting the preachers know where they are to be sent, before the Conference adjourns?" The reasons are various and good. It might give rise to dissatisfaction, complaint, petition, and even rebellion. Many amusing incidents have grown out of this practice. One as I understand, between Bishop Pierce and Simon Peter Richardson, which I will relate, begging their pardon. It seems that Bishop Pierce was presiding over the Conference of which Simon Peter was a member. They were very intimate; so much so, that Simon felt free to call him George. Before the Conference was adjourned, Simon grew restless, and was anxious to know his appointment; so, meeting the Bishop as he came out of the cabinet one evening, in a shy way he said, "George, what have you done with Simon?" (striking his breast significantly), "you know Simon never leaks!" "Ah! no," said the Bishop (striking his breast in return). And you know, Simon, George never leaks."
