EIGHT [Cont.] Free Masons While I was residing in Perry county, the Church was again agitated by some of our preachers joining the Free Masons. Prominent among these were Hugh McPhail and E.V. LeVert. It required all the skill of the conservative members to restore peace and amity. Many refused to hear them preach at all and the bitterest feeling and opposition were manifest even among prominent and intelligent members. About this time Rev. Thos. Abernathy, senior circulated in the region of the Poplar Springs, where was held annually a camp meeting. He was my intimate friend. We were much together in the pulpit and the social circle. Am amiable disposition by nature polished by the graces of Christianity made him one of the most genial and lovable of companions. It is a pleasing task for memory to lead me back over the scenes and incidents of our intercourse, and I linger today with pleasure and amidst the shadows of these delightful associations as they come trooping up one by one like flashes of sun light to brighten and gladden the evening of life.
