EIGHT [Cont.]

Free Masons

While I was residing in Perry county, the Church was again agitated by
some of our preachers joining the Free Masons. Prominent among these
were Hugh McPhail and E.V. LeVert. It required all the skill of the
conservative members to restore peace and amity. Many refused to hear
them preach at all and the bitterest feeling and opposition were
manifest even among prominent and intelligent members.

About this time Rev. Thos. Abernathy, senior circulated in the region
of the Poplar Springs, where was held annually a camp meeting. He was
my intimate friend. We were much together in the pulpit and the social
circle. Am amiable disposition by nature polished by the graces of
Christianity made him one of the most genial and lovable of companions.
It is a pleasing task for memory to lead me back over the scenes and
incidents of our intercourse, and I linger today with pleasure and
amidst the shadows of these delightful associations as they come
trooping up one by one like flashes of sun light to brighten and gladden
the evening of life. Like me, he hasn't long to wait; the other shore
is almost in sight, and I feel confident he is ready to join me in the
beautiful song:

"I would not live always, I ask not to stay"
