Hughes Date: June 20, 1998 Richard CAUTHEN [CAWTHORNE] [b.@1674 in Essex County, VA - died after 28 Nov 1747 in Hobbs Hole, Essex, VA]: From Vol II of "Virginia Colonial Abstracts", page #121, is the following entry: (the page itself being titled "Essex County Records , 1703-1706)......... Deed. 22 Nov 1705. Capt Wm Tomlin and Mr Thomas Meriwether, feoffes for the Townland in Essex sell Richard Cawthorne of the same Co., 1/2 acre, for 135 lb tobo. whereas by Act of Assembly 1691 appointing Townland in each river, and Hobbs Hole being nominated for a Town or port in the said Act, etc. This half acre was formerly laid off by Mr Edwin Thacker, Surveyor, and numbered and since surveyed by Cap't Charles Smith, Surveyor. It lies on the back of a lot belonging to Mr Tho Meriwether "standing by the Great Street which runeth across the Town parallel unto the river". Signed Wm Tomlin, Thomas Meriwether. Wit: Abraham Ayrton, Judith X Ayrton. Ack. and rec. 11 Dec 1705. Later in the same book, on page #424, is found the following entry: Bond. 21 March 1757. Refers to Richard Cauthorn late of this (Essex) Co., deceased, who by will dated 28 Nov 1747 left properties to his sons James, Vincent, Richard, Henry and William Cauthorn.
