I ask if she knew what Doc did for a living she said no. I then ask her about possible employment with railroad and she said that sounded familiar. Said I should check the Santa Fee RR first before the Rock Island RR. Another Coley interviewee who lived in Healdton, Ok. said: Healdton is 24 miles west of Ardmore, Doc had 7 brothers and 4 sisters, Doc married "Toad" after the divorce with Beulah HICKEY. Toad born and raised in Healdton Ok. Doc lived 5 or 6 years in Ok before he died, Doc was a carpenter, and before Doc moved to Oklahoma City he lived in Healdton, across the tracks from D. Coley (sounded like just a couple of blocks). Ringling is 7 miles west of Healdton Another interviewee said: Doc Coley was tall, dark hair, with a dark complexion, and very handsome. Said "all Coleys looked alike" if you have seen one you have seen them all! Said the Coley clan traits-------- OUTGOING PEOPLE, IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW DON'T ASK, ALCOHOL WAS VERY MUCH A PART OF COLEYS, WOULD GIVE THE SHIRT OFF OF THEIR BACKS WITHOUT ANY QUESTIONS. NOTES: It is reported that Charlie was an Indian Scout for Texas Rangers and that he was killed approximately 1879-80 during the range wars of TX. Charlie and Oscar (his son) took the buckboard out to work on a fence. Charlie was killed while repairing, rebuilding or building a fence by some men who rode up on horses and shot him. His son, Oscar was approximately 5 years old when it happened and saw it all. Oscar ran back to the house and told his pregnant mother. They went to the neighbors house and then they all went to see what happened. Oscar's father was dead when they arrived at the scene. .Some say Charlie was Chickasaw, or Pottawatomie ------------ full or 1/2. Per 1910 Census Oscar was born in TX per interviews Near Ardmore IT Notes for OSCAR DANIEL HICKEY: A newspaper obituary clipping says Oscar had a brother W L Roberts, and two sisters Mrs. Jammie/Jimmie McClain and Mrs Maude Anderson. The newspaper also said Oscar had been ill for several years. An interviewee, Jaqueta (his granddaughter), said he lived at several relative houses and doesn't think he ever had land of his own but remembers him having a horse and plow. Said they moved around giving her the impression they owned nothing. Oscar liked sitting next to Jaqueta during mealtime so he could give her the crust -- it was too hard for him. He and she played checkers a lot and he use to tell her mouse jokes. "Know which mouse can get into the hole the fastest? The one with the shortest tail! Know which Mouse can get the most molasses? The one with the longest tail! OSCAR DANIEL4 HICKEY (MINERVA CATHERINE "CALLIE"3 WARD, THOMAS H.2, THOMAS1) was born 01/05/1873 Per 1910 Census Oscar was born in TX per interviews Near Ardmore IT, and died 09/08/1939 in Shawnee, or McComb, Pottawatomie Co., OK, buried in Tulare Co., CA. He married LULA SMITH HUGHES 10/23/1893 in Loco, Indian Territory OK, daughter of SAMUEL HUGHES and LOUISA PORTER. Per newspaper clipping --- Oscar was buried in Tulare CA, was 66 age at death, left a brother W L "Roberts" (I think that would be his step brother) and two sisters. Died on a Friday and was buried the next Tuesday morning, had lived in OK since he was 1 year old! Jascall's Funeral Chapel services in Shawnee, and was living in OK when he died. .An interviewee said Oscar (as a child) went to Shawnee OK from TX during the time government was giving land to Indians. Was this the time of a "Land Run"? Said he was part Pottawatomie Indian. Said he had a farm in OK. Another interviewee said she thought Oscar was Shawnee Indian. Thought Lulu and Oscar both came from TX. She remembered that several years ago she received inquiries on Hughes side of the family (Lulu) regarding property in TX. that was in family. Oscar has a daughter buried in Tribby or McComb OK Another interviewee said Oscar was 1/4 Indian Another interviewee said Oscar was Choctaw Indian and the last year he farmed was 1929. Said Oscar and Lulu sold their equipment (not land) and soon after that, maybe that following fall, moved to CA 1929 or 1930. Lulu parents came From TX to visit during the equip sale to visit them (maybe to see them before they moved to CA.) Another interviewee said Oscar worked as common labor in Fresno, CA after moving from OK. Oscar had a sister named SALLY HICKEY who married a JIM HEAD in Loco, Ind Terr. Their children names are LULU5 HEAD and ELLA HEAD. . SALLY4 HICKEY (MINERVA CATHERINE "CALLIE"3 WARD, THOMAS H.2, THOMAS1) was born 01/01/1871, and died 10/10/1906 on the West Coast. 11. Another interviewee said Lula had cousins in Mineola, TX, had ex-kin in Golden, TX, died in a car accident, reported she was married Oct 22, 1893 in Loco, Indian Territory, confirms b. date per death certificate, 58 yrs, 4 mo, 16 days of life per certificate, There is a conflict with b date on another page using 1877 as b. year, no month 1910 Cencus says she was "white' Another interviewee (granddaughter) said she thought Lulu was full Irish, born in TX, was "black Irish" (meaning black or very dark haired Irish), had a brother Thomas with Irish brogue speech and very red hair. Said he lived in TX and that the granddaughter's parents rented land from Thomas in OK. She further said the Indian line is Cherokee and/or Chickasaw (she seemed definite). Also said they were one of the FIVE CIVILIZED TRIBES, came from North and/or South Carolina on the "Trail of Tears", and the Tribes were educated and had libraries and learning institutions. The marriage date on one interview has 0ct 22 1893 Per obit she was a resident of Shawnee, Macomb and Tribby for the past 35 years, was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church. About 1889, 1891 "Callie" and WL Roberts (4th husband) came with others during the land run from Loco, Indian Territory to homestead by Burneth, (or Burnett), OK Territory... by Tribby ... a historic accounting has it that WL ROBERTS decended from Black Hawk Roberts a full blooded Cherokee.
