About: Martha C. BRAKE who married three HENDERSON brothers in (Powell's
District) Kimberly, Jefferson Co, AL

Libbie Griffin of MA said that Bennett BRAKE and wife, Millie SPEER of
Jefferson Co, AL were the parents of Martha BRAKE b 1842 AL. This Martha is
the 1st person I wanted to find as related to the DOSS and HENDERSON family.
I have her first marriage license dated 10 Jun 1857 to William R. Henderson of
Jefferson Co, AL. Ambros Doss made bond. What caught my eye about this was
that I had seen deeds in Jefferson Co, transfering land between this Ambrose
Doss and our Hugh Mahaffey HENDERSON b 1814 Laurens Co, SC and who lived in JC
since about 1837. This William was his son.

William enlisted in the CSA in JC in 1862. But by that time Martha, his wife
had given birth to a son John Allen HENDERSON, Jr. b 1858. Family legend (two
sources) has it that this was a child begat by William's brother John Allen.
William was killed in the battle of Mobile and never returned home. Martha
has two daughters by John Allen in 1862 named Mary A. (Millie) who married
James Whisnant and Ginys or Gonya (unclear on census) who must have died
before 1870. John Allen was also killed.

The eldest brother, of William and John Allen, was James HENDERSON, b 1834
Gwinett Co, GA. He espoused Martha C. BRAKE HENDERSON, twice a widown, about
1865 in Winston Co, AL and they appear on the 1870, and 1880 census of that
county. In 1900 Martha is living in Lawrence Co, AL, Mountain Springs dist.
and in 1910 in Pinhook Dist.

Other DOSS family related to the wife of James HENDERSON of GWINETT CO, GA of
1820 Land Lot #84, and father of Hugh Mahaffey HENDERSON

In this book: GWINETT CO, GA FAMILIES 1818-1968; Gwinett Historical Society,
Lawrenceville, GA; Cherokee Pub. Co. 1980; also see supplement a few years
later; which is in the Gwinett County Courthouse. No copy is in the GA ST
ARchives.--

Pages 160 to 165 tell of family of George DOSS, written by Nellie Doss McCoy;
this may be the George you mentioned of Goochland Co, VA who migrated through
Carolina. Check the DOSS families of Gwinett in 1830 census and in Laurens
Co, SC.

When I saw that the James Jefferson DOSS b 1829 son of Edward and Seleta
PARKER DOSS m Rebecca TINNEY 26 Oct 1848 dau of Isaac and Susannah (King?)
TINNEY, I said WHOA!!!!

The wife of my Hugh MAHAFFEY HENDERSON b 1814 Laurens, SC, is said by legend
to be married to Mary Catherine "Polly" TINNEY b abt 1814 SC , a dau of
Richard TINNEY.

Now, the history of the ISAAC TINNEY family of Gwinett as in the vertical file
at the Gwinett Hist. Soc. shows that the Isaac 1798-1884 was the son of a
Richard TINNEY, but that Isaac was an illegitimate son of Deziah Elkins and
Richard, not Ruth Stark widow of Thomas Stark who he married 1808-1809.
Richard was b ca 1775-d ca 1820 (Laurens Co, SC ?). Richard was the legal son
of William TINNEY ca 1750-1807 and Matsilva of Newberry Co, SC. This TINNEY
gen was dated 1986.

HELP: I would like to hear if any of you know if there were TINNEY daughters
born about 1814 in SC or GA who could be the Mary "Polly" who married Hugh M.
HENDERSON about 1833 in Gwinett Co, GA ?????????????????????????
