Well, I figure it this way. You're descended from Matthew
Clark's 4th child and I'm descended from his 6th child. But
you're luckier than me from the genealogy aspect. All the work
on him was done by your line (I assume you have all that I'm
sending you below)...it was worked up by one of James Green
Clarke descendants.....I can tell you have at least parts of it
because our dates on Matthew's children and the very same EXCEPT
you don't have his 3rd wife and her two children.

I've got pictures of Matthew's grave (been there), and a
newspaper clipping or two about his Rev. days from one of your
folks in Miss, and some of an old diary of a visit by Micajah
Clark of Miss back to Sc....I bet you have this too but in case
not let me know.

So I'll toss out what I have for now...I feel obliged to ask you
not to do anything with my material other than to use it for your
own personal reasons....I say this only because recently I've
been real burned on some of my other lines to find that others
with whom I shared were using my data as "gospel" and claiming it
as their own research....I know the weak parts to my research and
will prove/disprove everything I have as time permits....I am
busy helping others to publish on 2 of my lines so haven't had
time to properly work the Clarke line.

So glad you made contact and hope to hear more from you.

Descendants of John Clarke

Generation No. 1

1. JOHN1 CLARKE was born 1503 in Finningham, Suffolk County,
England, and died March 02, 1558/59. He married MARGARET.

Notes for JOHN CLARKE:
Owned lands in Finningham, Westhorpe and Gislingham, Suffolk
County England.

The material on this family that I am listing down to Matthew
Clarke comes from a document that was complied by Charlton Moore
Clark and given to my grandmother Emma Bolt (ggranddaughter of
Matthew Clarke)..I quote from the preface to this document "The
year 1939 is the three hundredth anniversary of the coming of our
family from Suffolk County, England, to America. The data as to
births, marriages and deaths are taken from a book in the
Congressional Library, covering the first six generations of
thich we have a record. this book is entitled Ancestry of Dr.
John Clark, of Newport, Rhode Island, by C. Andrews Moriarty, Jr.
reprinted from an article "Genealogical Researches in England",
in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register of
October, 1921. Additional data relative to the family from the
birth of John Clarke in England, in 1503, to emigration of Joseph
Clarke to America in 1639, and until migration of a later Joseph
Clarke from Rhode Island to Birginia, are taken from "The Clarke
Familes of Rhode Island", by George Austin Morrison, Jr.
Virginia data are recorded in St. James Northern, a register kept
by Rev. Wm. Douglas, of the Church of England, in Goochland and
Louisa Counties, Va. from 1750 to 1794.

Until removal from Virginia to South Carolina, after the close of
the Revolutionary War, the surname of our family terminated with
the letter "e", and was printed and written CLARKE. Since then
the name has been CLARK. The compliler of this has letters
written by his Great-grandfather signed Matthew Clarke. Both
Matthew Clarke and his father Joseph Clarke served in the
Revolutionary Army of Virginia.

From Anderson Independent-June 1942
A Tribute to A Good Man-Mr. D. J. Bolt
Best known to all who had known him long as Dolph Bolt. I would
think of him first as a man poor in spirit and the good book
says"Blessed are the poor in spirit for they shall see God."
Dolph Bolt was rich in the gift of God's love for his fellow man,
always putting others first. When one did him a kindness he
would not forget it and it tendered his heart. As he grew older
his heart seemed to grow more tender. He was a good Father,
husband, neighbor and friend. I think one of his chief
characteristics was honesty. Honest in his desire for the well
doing of his fellow man. Honest with his God and that covers all
the ground that God wants covered, I think he was a man without
malice to anyone. He has left a monument in his children, having
instilled this same principle of honesty, truth and faithfulness
in them. For many years I have know him and while he never tried
to talk too much he seemed to choose carefully his words,
especially, if they pertained to his fellow man and in my humble
opinion if he could not find something good to say of someone he
didn't say anything. God only promised him three score and ten
years but he was spared for more than that time and just as long
as God gave him physical strength to do it he earned his living
and helped provide for those dependent on him by the sweat of his
brow as God had commanded men to do. Surely, with the youth of
our land being called into soldierly service, and many may not
attain their three score and ten years on this sin cursed earth
but will be called to go up to the same God, Dolph Bolt has been
called up to. God will have them all renewed in strength and
able to join in singing forevermore the songs Dolph Bolt so loved
to lead. All Hail Emanuel. He was a good man and God took
him. A Friend, Geo. H. Bailes
