I know that Hamburg is directly across the Savannah River from Augusta GA in
Aiken County - more an "community" this days rather than a town, though its
still referred to as Hamburg even these days.

I'll have to let someone more knowledgeable tell you what it was in 1850 - my
impression is that Hamburg was more thriving and of significance in the past.
