Subject: GREENVILLE COUNTY ... BLACK PEOPLE ... by Anne K. McCuen From: Steve Coker Date: November 07, 1998 McCuen, Anne K. ABSTRACTS OF SOME GREENVILLE COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA, RECORDS CONCERNING BLACK PEOPLE, FREE AND SLAVE, 1791-1861. Vol. 1. An original publication, 1991 (x), 228 pp., index ISBN 0-87152-440-6 LC 89-24121 (x) $25.00 [1998 catalogue price] Few public documents remain extant regarding slaves, slave masters, and free blacks of Greenville County, S.C. Those that are extant are part of the deed records in the Office of the Register of Mesne Conveyance. However, those records do not appear in the grantor-grantee general indexes and, therefore, have become "lost" in the R M C Office Deed Books. This book "finds" those documents and presents in abstract form material from deed books pertaining to black people, free and slave, from 1791 through 1861. Greenville County had few slaves as compared to coastal areas. However, from 1790 until 1860 the number of slaves increased from 606 to 7,049 and the number of free colored (black and Indian) increased from 9 to 212.
