Subject: Green-POWG-1 From: gslat Date: January 02, 2000 GREEN, ELISHA. 1790-1875 WARE Elisha Green, one of the first settlers of Ware County and the second Coroner of the county, was born in South Carolina, Oct. 17, 1790, son of Jacob Green. He was married twice. His first wife by whom six children were born, was Elizabeth Wilkinson, born about 1803 in Bulloch County, daughter of James Wilkinson. After her death Nov. 25, 1841, Mr. Green was married on Jan. 6, 1846, to Elizabeth Driggers, born in Appling County, June 30, 1825, daughter of William Driggers (Vol. 1, with addition thereto in this volume). By her thirteen children were born. The nineteen children of Mr. Green in their order, were: 1. James b. 1820, m, Diana Driggers, dau. of Wm- (VOL I) 2. John b. 1822, M. Delilah English. 3. After living in Bulloch County some years Mr. Green moved with his wife's parents and others of the family connection to Appling County and settled on or near the Satilla River in the 584th militia district, a district now wholly in Pierce County but which In those days included some territory now in Brantley County. There he was living when Ware County was made out of Appling in December, 1824. In the first election in the 584th district for Justices of the Peace after the creation of Ware, Mr. Green -was elected we of the Justices and served until 1828. He then served as Coroner 1828-1830. About 1830-35, Elisha Green and family removed from Ware County to Columbia County, Fla., and settled in the northern part of the county on the south prong of the St. Mary's River. He later was cut out of Columbia into Baker County when it was created about 1858; and lived in that county until death Oct. 17, 1875. His second wife survived and died Jan. 5, 1905. They were buried in South Prong Cemetery, Baker County. Mr. Green was a veteran of the War of 1812, and his widow drew a pension for his service, from 1879 until her death. He served a six month's tour in the Georgia militia as a private under Capt Peter Cone. He served with his command at old Sunbury from March 26, 1814 until Sept. 25, 1814, when he was honorably discharged at Fort Jackson. He also served in the Indian War about 1840, in Capt. James Piles' company, Ist Florida Regiment of militia. Census Refs: 1820, Bulloch; 1830, Ware; 1840, 1850, Columbia (Fla.); 1860, 1870, Baker (Fla.). ----------------------------------------------- GREEN, JESSE T., SR. 1818-1901 CAMDEN Jesse T. Green, Sr. was born in Georgia in 1818, probably in Camden County near Trader's Hill, a son of Daniel Green. He married Kesiah Crews in December of 1835. Her father was killed during the Indian War, and her mother, Elizabeth Crews, eventually made her home with a son in Baker County, Florida. Kesiah died, probably in childbirth. Elizabeth is believed to be a daughter of William Hazzard of Beaufort, South Carolina. Jesse and Kesiah had the following children: L Hester b. 1837, m. John Moore (2nd husband). 2. Calvin b. 1839. d. 7/28/1862. in CSA (Co. G, 4th Ga. Cav.). 3. Berien Benjamin b. 1841, m. ????? ??????? . 4. William "Bill" b. 1843, m. Mary E. Stokes, dau. of Henry. 5. Kesiah "Kizzie" b. 1844, m. James Calvin Thompson. On April 17, 1844, Jesse married Sophia Crews, a sister of Kesiah. Children of the second marriage were: 6. Jesse T., Jr. b. 3/26/1845, m. Roseanna Alexander, b. 1842, dau. of Wm. W. 7. Isiah (twin) b. 1847, died young. 8. Renah (twin) b. 1847, died young. 9. Perry b. 1849, m. Sarah "Babe" Glesson. 10. Isabella b. 1853, died young. 11. Elizabeth"Betsy" b. 1852, m. Jim Pringle. 12. Owen b. 1854, m. Jane Sellers. 13. Sallie b. 1858, m. Jeff Underhill. 14. Mary J. b. 1855, m. never married. 15. Amanda b. 1862, m. Jeff Norman. 16. Nathan D."Drink" b. 1864, m. Sarah Hudson. 17. Elisha W. b. 1868, m. Nancy Wills. Jesse T. Green, Sr., at the age of 20, enlisted as a Private in Capt. E. D. Tracy's Company, 3rd Regiment, Georgia Mounted Militia, at Centerville, Georgia, in 1838, for 3 months. Col. Revels was the Militia Commander. Green enlisted for 6 months in October of 1840, and mustered out at Trader's Hill in March of 1841. His Unit of the Militia was incorporated into the regular US Army as "Citizen Soldiers" and they were recognized as having been in the military service of the United States. He also served under Captain Isaac Bush, 1838-39, Florida Volunteers. He received a pension for this service amounting to $8.00 per month. His application, for this pension, was made in Bradford County, and his witnesses were William Underhill and N. D. Wainwright. Those witnessing his wife's claim were G. W. Kersey and W. W. Tumblin. Jesse T. Green, Sr. also served in the Civil War. He and his sons, Calvin, William, Benjamin, and Jesse, Jr. enlisted in Clinch's 4th Georgia Cavalry in 1861. He and Jesse, Jr. fought at Olustee. According to a daughter of Jesse, Jr., the battle there was the "bloodiest battle" he ever saw. This included four years of warfare, and the Battle of Atlanta. Jesse, Sr. brought his family to Bradford County about 1872, settling at Heilbronn Springs (in S 36 T5 R 21 S & E). Seven of his children reared their families in Bradford County: "Missy" (Lawtey); Perry (Brooker); Hester (Heilbronn Springs); Amanda (Lawtey); Sallie (Heilbronn Springs). William moved from Olustee to Charlton County, Georgia. Jesse, Jr. and his wife, Roseann (whose father is in the 1860 New River County Census) moved about 1880 to Nassau County, as did "Betsy" and Owen. There are no records on the others, except Mary, who lived with her parents. Jesse T. Green, Sr. died in Bradford County on November 30, 1901. His wife, Sophia, died December 31, 1905. Both are buried in unmarked graves at Evergreen Cemetery in Bradford County. This cemetery is located on the grounds of the Florida State Prison.
