Subject: Grays Hill, Beaufort County, SC - Origin of Town Name From: Southusa Date: November 28, 2000 Dear List Members, I am interested in the origin of the name of the town, Grays Hill. This is what my family has told me. I'd like to know if anyone else has a story about this small rural area of Beaufort County, South Carolina. Family lore says that the small town of Gray's Hill in Beaufort County, South Carolina, was named by my grandfather, William Melvin Davis (1877-1954). He ran a small store and was a notary public (I have his iron notary press). Around the turn of the century, the US Post Office wanted to bring postal service to the town and asked him to give the town a name. From my understanding, my grandfather's store was used for the postal service. I'd love to hear from others who may have connections to Gray's Hill.
