Subject: Grays Hill, Beaufort County, SC From: Southusa Date: May 06, 1999 Good Morning List-members, Does anyone know anything about the cty of Grays Hill, Beaufort County, SC. It is on Hwy. 21, near Whale Branch Creek. Supposedly my grandfather, William Melvin Davis (1877-1954), ran a general store in that area (early 1900's) and gave the town its name when the U.S. Post Office wanted to put a small post office inside his store. I remember as a child visiting our DAVIDSON and IHLY cousins in that area, but I do not remember the store. I grew up in nearby Grahamville, near Ridgeland, Jasper County, SC. I would like to know where in Grays Hill the store was located, where the DAVIS' lived at the time, and why he chose the name "Grays Hill". Is there any significant Civil War history from that area? I am aware of the Battle of Tullifini in Coosawhatchie and the Battle of Honey Hiill in Grahamville. Thank you!
