Subject: Re: Goethe/Goettee/Peeples/Hiers/Bowers/Davis, etc. family From: Joe Jones Date: August 08, 1999 Allison: My Davis ancestor may not be related to yours, but here is a synopsis: John Clarke Davis, b. 1755, Wales, m. 1778, Johnson County, NC, Mourning Pilkinton, b. 1761. John and Mourning had a son, Needham Davis, b 1780, near Smithfield, NC, m. 1804, Smithfield, NC., Elizabeth Norris b. 1781. They had the following children: Sidney Marquese Davis (my ancestor), Elizabeth Davis, Mary Jane Davis, William Chauncy Davis, Catherine Eugenia Davis, Lorenzo Dow Davis, Sarah Davis and Aurelius Rufus Davis. My source says that Needham and Elizabeth moved to Columbia, SC in 1807 or 1808, then in 1814 to their final home on the South Edisto River, Barnwell District, now Aiken County where they established a home, mill, etc., and where Needham practiced medicine. They were buried near Davis Bridge as were at least two of their children. Needham was postmaster of the Davis Mill PO from its creation until his death in 1860. It later was renamed Davis Bridge PO and was abandoned in 1904. I have a little more info on John Clark Davis and his three brothers, also continuation on the family of my ancestor, Sidney Marquese Davis. The latter covers the Davis connection with the Salley and Corbitt families. My sources were Eloise Jones' book on Jeremiah Jones and Olin Salley's book on the Salley Family. Will be glad to send it to you or anyone else interested.
