"Surviving members of Capt. Joseph Hamilton's Company of the 2nd
N.C.
Mounted Infantry, U.S. Army ( a part of Stoneman.s Army during the Civil
War),
holding an annual convention some 30 years after the Civil War. "

Once you've identified what Company and Regiment a man belonged to, the
next step is to identify the leaders and their assignments in the war.

Lieut. Gen. George Stoneman was head of a Cavalry unit which saw service
in VA early in the war, then served under Sherman in the Atlanta
campaign.

Cavalry units moved around much more that infantry or artillery units -
obviously, but it's pretty easy to track them.

An excellent reference is Sifakis - Compendium of the Confederate Army
for outlining Confederate units, and Dyers' work - I forget the exact
title - outlines each of the Federal units.
