George Russell Sowell was born 24 Oct 1845, son of Gilliam Sowell and
Flora Murchison.  On 7 Apr 1867 he married Mary Elinor Horton, b. 29 Aug
1846, d. 9 Jan 1921; daughter of John Stanley Horton and Biddy Ann
Sowell.  

The obituary for George reads as follows:

"Mr. George R. Sowell died on the 19th inst., after several months
serious illness.  He was badly jurt at Jefferson about 2 years ago by
being thrown from a buggy.  His collar bone was broken, and he never did
fully recover from the injuries sustained in that runaway.  Mr. Sowell
was married to Mary Horton, daughter Jackie Horton on the 7th day of
April 1867, and to them was born ten children, four of them died several
years ago.  The living are Mrs. Henry Seegars, Mrs. Ed Gardner, Mrs. Joe
Sullivan, Miss Olive Sowell, and two grown sons Jackson and Julius. Mr.
Sowell had served the people of Jefferson Township for the past twelve
years as Magistrate and given general satisfaction, and had announced
himself as a candidate for reelection again this year but had to withdraw
From the race on account of his feeble condition.  Esq. Sowell as he was
called, would have been elected again if he had lived to make the race.
He was a quiet peaceable Law Abiding citizen, a good neighbor, a kind
husband and father and he was also a member of the Famers Union.  Mr.
Sowell had thirteen grandchildren ten of them still living.
His body was laid away in the Horton Cemetery on the 20th by the members
of the Famers' Union.  The funeral services were conducted by Rev. A.W.
White.
He was a Civil War Veteran."

Marriage date fixed by an entry in the "Reverend Aaron Weaver Knight
Journal".
