Subject: Genealogical Gleanings in England From: Maryd0318 Date: September 10, 1999 compiled by Peter Wilson Coldham National Genealogical Society Quarterly March 1976 vol 64 no 1 pg. 48 John Walter, South Carolina Landowner , 1734, Will of John Walter, Esq. , of Tooting, Surrey, dated 30 December 1734. My eldest son Abell Walter to be my sole executor and his mother , my wife to be sole guardian to my young children. To AbellWalter all my manors, lands, etc.in Great Britain and Barbados, and all my personal estate in trust to be applied to payment of my debts and to provide L 400 a yhear for life to my wife in discharge of dower. To my wife all of my mansion house at Hocbridge purchased from James Field Esq. deceased, Richard Bird and Catharine his wife, together with household goods, and she is to have a coach or chariot, a pair of my best horses and 100 guineas for mourning. To my son Henry Walter half of all my lands in Granvill County, South Carolina from Captain Douglas, 20 negro slaves now on the same, and 1000 acres of land held by grant from the Crown being part of the Barony lying at Days Creek in Granvill Co. . To my son William Walter the other half of my lands purchased of Captain Douglas, 20 slaves, 1000 acres of land in my Barony and L 1250, To my sons James, Allleyne, and MeynellWalter 2000 acres of land with slaves and cattle, and Henry Walter is to assist them in stocking. To my daughters Lucy and Mary L 2000 each when they are 18 but meanwhile to be out of interest for their maintenance and education. My executor to vest 1000 acres of my Barony with 20 negros and to manage it for my son John Walter for life "so that he may be incapable of running the same into dand after his decease to his son , if he leaves any, or otherwise to return to my child or children that shall be settled in South Carolina, To my son Richard Walter, who has already received a fine fortune from me, 1000 acres in my Barony and L500 to stock it. To my grandson John Walter, son of Abell, all my lands in Goose Creek. South Carolina , known as Red Bank, and the remainder of my Barony being 2000 acres. To my daughter Elizabeth Dottin L 500 to be invested in trust for her. To my daughter Lucy Walter L 500 in addition to what I have already given her in this will, to be given her when she is 21. If my son Henry Walter should not settle in South Carolina within 4 years from the date of my will, my bequest to him to be void and he is to have L1500 Barbados money to be paid by Mr, William Walker in Barbados, and L1250 sterling to be paid by my executor. At my death I have upwards of 100 negroes on my lands in Carolina: they are to be valued and put on the lands of James, Alleyne and Meynell Walter to be equally divided in numbers and their value deducted from the amounts left them. To my grandson John Walter L2000 to stock the lands I have given him. To my servant Elizabeth Porter L 20 and to all my servants living with me L5 each, . Witnessed Thomas Bund, E. Alleyne, Benjamin Maynard, Codicil of 18 March 1735/6. My son Henry Walter to have L 1250 if he settles in South Carolina within the time limit. My sons James, Alleyne and Meynell Walter to receive no more than L 40 a year each for their maintenance until they are 18. Witnesses as before, Proved June 1736 by Abel Walter, Esq.
