SOOUTH CAROLINA.   Will of John Brathwaite, Esq., in South Carolina, dated 1 
April  1740. To my mother Mrs. Silvester Brathwaite of Dover, widow, L 20 for 
mourning and L 40 a ear for life. To my nephew Thomas L 20 for mourning and L 
10 to his mother, and in case  my nephew does not get his grandfather's 
estate or part of it, I leave him L 50 to be paid when he is 21. To all my 
nearest relations a 20 shilling ring  each. To the daughter of Mrs. Hannah 
Ives L 20 when she is 21. To my wife L 1000 sterling and the residue of my 
estate except my books , sword, and watch which I give to my son. Half the 
interest on my estate is to be used for the education and  maintenance  of my 
children, my eldest to have double allowance. My executors are empowered to 
dispose of my estate in Carolina and to invest the proceeds. Executors to be 
my wife; Mrs. Margaret   Pultney, widow of Daniel Pultney, Esq., Mrs.  
Elizabeth  Tichburn, sister  to Mrs. Pultney, and Thomas Revell, Esq., 
Commissioner of the Victualling and member of Parliament. Witnessed Peter 
Colleton and J. Colleton, P.S.  My estate  in England is in the hands of  
Edward Jasper, Esq., on Tower Hill and in Carolina in the hands of Benjamin 
Wittaker, Esq., Chief Justice, and Mr. George Austin, merchant. Certificate 
by Abraham Croft, notary public of South Carolina, that the will was executed 
at Charles Town 29 April 1740. Proved 27 August 1740 by Silvia Brathwaite, 
the relicit , and Elizabeth Tichborne, spinster. (PRO:PCC 219/1740)
