I saw your query and thought I would reply.  I don't want to confuse you
though!  I have an unpublished manuscript by a lady here in GA who
researched the Gassaway name for years.  She spent a lot of time on
GA and SC.  Her and my ancestors were never tied to the Gassaway's
in the Rutherford book, so she spent a ton of time doing this. 
anyway...She has James Gassawy Sr., b 1734 MD d. 1804 Pendleton
District, SC married Rachel unk. prior to 1777 in VA
Their children were:
James Jr.
John
Nicholas
Caleb
Rev. William b. c1765
Henry b. c1774
